1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 HISTORY OF MECHANICAL PENCIL

The idea of creating a mechanical pencil first came to the Conrad Gesner mind in 1565. He invented a pencil but the inside of it did not have a mechanism to push the lead forward to the lead sleeve. Instead, the mechanical pencil manually adjusted to sharpen it. Later on in 1822, English silversmith Sampson Mordan and English engineer John Isaac Hawkins invented a mechanical pencil that had a mechanism that pushed the lead forward. Since then people continued to improve the parts of a mechanical pencil. More importantly, between 1822 to 1874, 160 patents were registered on improving components of a mechanical pencil (History of the Mechanical Pencil – Inventor of Mechanism, 2017).

1.2 PURPOSE OF INVENTING MECHANICAL PENCIL

Mechanical pencil were invented to protect our environment because the traditional pencil was made from trees. The negative impact of cutting down trees is deforestation. It contributes to climate change because cutting down trees adds more carbon dioxide in the air (Scott, 2018). The advantage of a Bazic Diamante 0.5 pencil is they are made of plastics and metals so it can be recycled to reuse again. According to Slate Magazine, the mechanical pencil is longer lasting than the traditional wooden pencil because the leads are refillable so the users do not need to change their pencil on regular basis (Leibenluft, 2008). The mechanical pencil saved users plenty of time because they could avoid sharpening.

1.3 BAZIC DIAMANTE PENCIL DESCRIPTION

In the 21st century, Bazic Company continues to improve the mechanical pencil components to introduce new innovation and unique features so the users can have advantages while writing. The Bazic Diamante 0.5 mechanical pencil parts include a sleeve, pocket clip, cone cap, shaft, chuck, chuck ring, lead sleeve, grip, spring, shaft dispenser, eraser, and eraser cap. It is used for neat writing and drawing. It offers exciting new features that make the pencil more effective and attractive to the consumers such as eraser top, beautiful design on the cone cap, and the anti-skidding grip. The price is cheap and the user gets three unique colors of the pencil in one pack for only $1.19 plus tax. The Bazic Diamante is an ideal mechanical pencil because they are environmentally friendly, prices are affordable, the design on the pencil is astonishing, and the unique grip helpful to users.

2. DESCRIPTION OF THE OUTER PARTS OF BAZIC DIAMANTE PENCIL

The Bazic Diamante pencil has two main components:

  1. Barrel Assembly
  2. Gripping Assembly

Figure 2: Two Main Components of Mechanical Pencil

2.1. BARREL ASSEMBLY

2.1.1 ERASER CAP

The eraser cap is an advance innovation because usually mechanical pencils does not include one. It serves as a button on the pencil because pressing it lead will come out from the lead sleeve. Furthermore, the component is significant to protect the eraser from losing because it usually becomes thinner after using it; as a result, it comes out easily. Thus, the eraser cap prevents the eraser from coming out by blocking it. It can be easily removed from the pencil just simply pulling the cap to use the eraser. The eraser cap is very lightweight. It makes the mechanical pencil look attractive because eventually erasers get dirty after using them. Thus, when the eraser cap cover the eraser, then the pencils always look brand new.

2.1.2 POCKET CLIP

The pocket clip helps the users to carry the pencil without fear of losing it because they can attach their pencil to pocket, shirt, and notebook. Then the pocket clip provides stability to the eraser holder by preventing it from moving up and down. The pocket clip on the Bazic Diamante pencils is flexible; therefore, it would not break easily.

2.1.3 SLEEVE

The sleeve is one of the most important components of mechanical pencils because they protect inside materials from breaking. Then the sleeve connects the barrel and gripping assembly together so without the sleeve mechanical pencils would not work. The benefit of Bazic Diamante pencils is users can easily view the status of the lead without taking the lead out because the sleeve is transparent.

2.2 GRIPPING ASSEMBLY

2.2.1 GRIP

The grip provides extra comfort to the users because it is very soft. The grip on Bazic Diamante pencils is unique because there are multiple dots on it to prevent skidding. The innovation is effective for users whose hands get sweaty while writing because it is difficult for a person to grip pencils with slippery hands. Then the writing becomes difficult to the users. As a result, the new innovation will make life easier for everyone because the grip is designed in a way to provide extra comfort with anti-skidding.

2.2.2 CONE CAP

The cone cap also serves as a grip in the pencil because the users hold it while writing. The cone cap of the Bazic Diamante pencil is unique because there are multiple line on it to prevent skidding. The design on the cone cap suggested that the inventor thinks about every user and the pencil created in a way that everyone can use it to write better. More importantly, the anti-skidding idea is unique and it makes the Bazic Diamante pencils different than others.

2.2.3 LEAD SLEEVE

The lead sleeve is the same size as the lead number to prevent the lead from moving around. Also, through the lead sleeve users can easily refill the lead into the pencil by pressing the eraser cap to permit chuck ring to open the chuck so that lead can put into lead sleeve to reach the shaft.

3. INTERIOR COMPONENTS OF THE BAZIC DIAMANTE MECHANICAL PENCIL

The Bazic Diamante pencil consists of 6 components:

1. Eraser 2. Shaft 3. Spring 4. Chuck 5. Chuck Ring 6. Shaft Dispenser

3.1 ERASER

The eraser makes life easier for the users because additionally they do not have to carry a giant eraser with them to fix errors. The eraser also helps the lead to stay inside the shaft because there is a small hole on the eraser top to insert leads into pencils. When the eraser gets lost, it is difficult to keep the lead inside. The beauty of Bazic Diamante pencils is the eraser is thin and lightweight. Therefore, there is a perfect balance between the barrel and gripping assembly and the users do not feel heavy while writing.

3.2 SHAFT

The shaft serves as a protector of lead because extra lead piece stay inside it; as a result, the shaft stop the leads from breaking. The shaft is big enough for lazy users to place multiple lead at the same to avoid the hassle of refilling leads. The shaft also serves as the eraser holder because eraser is located on top of the shaft. Most importantly, the shaft is made of plastic so it can be recycled. Consequently, the shaft is environmentally friendly and the manufacturer can cheaply create Bazic Diamante pencils because recycling plastics are inexpensive.

3.3 SPRING

The spring helps the lead to come through the lead sleeve. When users press the eraser cap, then the spring pushes it back to their normal position. At the same time, the chuck ring permits the chuck to grabs the lead from the shaft to advance the lead close to the lead sleeve. The spring is made from the metal; as a result, they are environmentally friendly, and it can be reused again.

3.4 CHUCK

The chuck is a small tube, which functions as a bridge between the shaft and lead sleeve because it connects them together. The chuck can be close and open. The purpose of the chuck is to grabs the lead from the shaft to move it forward. The chuck allows the lead to get advance when the users press the eraser cap.

3.5 CHUCK RING

The purpose of chuck ring is to close the chuck when it opens to keep the additional piece of the lead inside the pencil. The chuck also prevents the lead to go back when it closes. Therefore, the chuck ring plays an essential role to keep the lead inside the pencil.

3.6 SHAFT DISPENSER

The purpose of shaft dispenser is to keep the spring, chuck, and chuck ring together inside it because if these components get disconnected, then the mechanical pencil would not function accurately.

4. HOW THE BAZIC DIAMANTE PENCIL CAN BE USED OR FUNCTIONS?

The Bazic Diamante pencils can be used when the users insert the lead into it. The users can insert the lead into pencils by removing the eraser and eraser cap from the pencils to put lead inside through the hole located on the eraser holder. On the other hand, users can put the lead into the pencils by keep holding the eraser cap to allow the chuck ring to open the chuck to place the lead into it. After completing the lead inserting then pressing the eraser cap the lead would automatically come through the lead sleeve. When users press the eraser cap, then the chuck grabs the lead from the shaft to advance the lead to go through the lead sleeve. The users will keep pressing the eraser cap until the lead come through the lead sleeve. Finally, the users can grip the mechanical pencil like a traditional wood pencil to write neatly without sharpening.

5. CONCLUSION

Bazic Diamante pencil is effective for every user because there is a unique design on the grip and cone cap to make the pencil anti-skidding. Overall, the pencil is looking attractive with the eraser cap because it covers the eraser to make the pencil looks new. The price is affordable to buy the pencils and it is relatively cheaper because they contain rich quality grip, cone cap, eraser cap, and colorful sleeves which is makes the pencil looks beautiful. More importantly, the product will not be banned by the Environment Protection Agency because they usually ban products which contains harmful toxins that contaminant the environments. However, Bazic Diamante pencils are environmentally friendly because the component does not include dangerous toxic and all component can be reused again to create a new pencil.
